Raided Augusta church accused of stalling federal investigation

house of prayer

Remember, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, and God knows your heart even if you can't find the words to pray. During our 19th anniversary, about 1,000 Chinese church leaders from across the globe joined us in Kansas City. This four-day gathering called Convergence was greatly used by the Lord to shift our IHOPKC community into a reset with a renewed commitment to prioritize growing as a family. IHOPU obtained permission to accept international students, and the first students from outside the US arrived for the fall semester of 2010.

Our vision is to prepare thousands of full-time intercessory missionaries who, like John the Baptist, live a lifestyle of discipline and devotion to God, whose lives and voices cry out, “Prepare the way of the Lord! ” We invite you to visit the prayer room in person or join us online via the free live webstream. Join with us as we set our hearts to love God, worship Him alone, and dedicate our lives to serving Him without reservation; to demonstrate our love for others in works of service, justice, outreach, and compassion; and to proclaim the return of Jesus. On May 7, 1999, the International House of Prayer began in the “old trailers” on Grandview Road, with 13 hours of prayer and worship each day.

Other outreaches include Children’s Justice Initiative to serve orphans and children at risk. We are partnering with Women’s Life Center, a local crisis pregnancy center helping women who refuse abortion and choose life. In the future we plan to provide homes and restoration programs for victims of human trafficking and domestic violence, and prostitutes who respond to the gospel.

The East that leads to Christ

Its headquarters were in Washington Court House, Ohio—where a church still met as of 2014[update]. The prayer room was moved from the trailer on Grandview Road into the remodeled Red Bridge Center, bringing a much-needed addition of space and amenities. The new prayer room was dedicated on March 7, 2003, and continues today as the Global Prayer Room (GPR). Higher Grounds, led by Beth Stone, opened its doors late in 2001. In 2002, Dennis and Paula Bowers moved to Kansas City, and Dennis took up the position of leading the café— which offers coffee, tea, smoothies, and a variety of baked goods and food.

That benefit has long been considered sacrosanct as both a top recruiting tool and largely seen on Capitol Hill as one of the federal government's most successful programs. Prosecutors are demanding the church provide a roster of its owners, employees and students and all money paid to the church from the VA. The Lord’s intent for the temple was that it would be a joyful place where all people communed together with their God and that they would all share one another’s joy.

We bought the strip mall on Red Bridge Road in Kansas City on February 26, 2001. Over the next two years, we gradually moved our center of operations from the trailers in Grandview to the new location at Red Bridge Center equipped with much-needed office space and meeting rooms. We also expanded our facilities during that time by providing a kitchen for the internships and starting work on a coffee shop. The first internship began with five young adults, including Misty Edwards, Alisha Powell, and Aaron Walsh. Since then we have expanded to five different internships and have had the privilege to be part of equipping thousands of interns who have gone on to staff prayer rooms across the US and abroad (as well as our own prayer room). In Assisi, Italy, Mike heard the Lord say that He would raise up “friends of the Bridegroom forerunner messengers” to prepare the Bride for Christ’s return.

Location of Worship

Following in this tradition, in 1999 the International House of Prayer started a prayer and worship meeting in Kansas City. We are committed to prayer, fasting, the Great Commission, and to living as forerunners, spiritually preparing for the unique dynamics of the end times. The work of our ministry includes equipping and sending out missionaries as dedicated intercessors and evangelists who work to see revival within the Church and a harvest among those searching for God.

We pray for all who enter and patronize this temple, that they may receive sacred blessings and remain worthy and faithful to their covenants made here. We pray also that this may be a house of peace, a house of comfort and a house of personal revelation for all who enter these doors worthily. We ask Thee to bless those who seek to understand the power with which they are endowed here to receive knowledge from on high. Across Italy there are houses of prayer run by the Ricostruttori (Reconstructors) community, a Catholic movement dedicated to people who are far from the Church but attracted to spirituality, particularly Eastern meditation and Buddhist practices. When God described His meeting place, He used the phrase “house of prayer.” Prayer in Jewish culture and Hebrew word meaning wasn’t just a laundry list of wishes or a heavenly “honey-do” list.

A few years after the prayer room opened in 1999, prayer meetings began in Spanish, Korean, and Chinese. As different ethnic groups continued to grow in our community, more languages were added to prayer meetings. On June 10, 2013, we dedicated the All Nations Prayer Room to the Lord where prayer with worship was led 85 hours per week in nine languages—Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Farsi, Portuguese, French, and German. At our tenth anniversary, on September 19, 2009, our staff members renewed their commitment to serve the Lord in 24/7 prayer with worship and made an additional commitment to serve the Lord and people with 24/7 works of justice.

The only matters left for consideration are whether the church has shown cause for not complying and who bears responsibility for that, prosecutors say. Federal prosecutors say any arguments against turning over the documents are irrelevant at this point, since the time for doing so has passed. “A man who steals from a church does not fear God, his community or law enforcement. The court ordered the church and its parent company to turn over documents, but they refuse, saying this would violate their Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves. According to previous court filings, the Department of Veterans Affairs paid more than $20 million in benefits to the church as part of GI Bill funding for education. The FBI simultaneously raided House of Prayer churches in Hinesville and Augusta in June 2022 for suspected VA fraud.

Mike initially didn’t believe Bob, but two weeks later it was confirmed to him that Bob, in fact, had heard from the Lord. Bob, who passed away in 2014, played a pivotal role in encouraging Mike during the early years of the movement and was a great friend to IHOPKC. Some former IHOPKC members have said the church was coercive and cult-like; the church has stated that it’s elder-led, has checks in place for leaders, and is committed to safety against sexual, emotional, physical, and spiritual abuse. Staff at IHOPKC number around 2,000, all full-time missionaries who raise their own support, according to the ministry website.

The movement launched by Cappelletto spread by word of mouth throughout Italy, from Piedmont to Sicily. Today, it is recognized as a public association of the faithful, encompassing people from various backgrounds and vocations. The church contends it can withhold documentation from the court on Fifth Amendment grounds, a defense federal prosecutors argue has absolutely no legal ground, court records show. An attorney representing the church did not return a request for comment ahead of publication. Federal prosecutors say a church accused of scamming veterans out of millions of dollars’ worth of benefits is stalling an investigation and should be held in contempt of court and fined. We ought to make sure we don’t bring selfishness, commerce, racism, disunity, or any other thing that would hinder a spirit of sweet joyful prayer to the gathering of God’s people.

Former church officials and members described to Military.com how its leadership pushed service members and veterans to give their pay and benefits. In some cases, the church pressured its members to cut off ties to their families and either move into the church or provide full-time labor without pay. This article is part of our prayer resources meant to inspire and encourage your prayer life when you face uncertain times.

We refer to our full-time staff at the International House of Prayer as “intercessory missionaries.” They raise their own support to work as full-time missionaries who reach out to others from a lifestyle of prayer and worship. Today, about 2,000 believers (staff, students, and interns) serve full-time, investing fifty hours per week, as they go from the prayer room to the classroom and then to ministry outreaches and works of service. Also, as those who are committed to the forerunner message, we are spiritually equipping ourselves to prepare others for the unique dynamics of the generation in which the Lord returns. Around 1000 BC, King David established a tabernacle in Jerusalem and set a precedent of night and day worship before the Lord that continued at various times throughout Israel and Judah’s history. Each time this order of worship was reintroduced, spiritual breakthrough, deliverance and military victory followed. Likewise, throughout the centuries, groups in Ireland, Germany, South Korea, and elsewhere across the globe have established day and night centers of prayer and worship.

Prayer was a heartbeat for Paul’s ministry and it is meant to be ours as well. God’s heart for his place of worship was that it would be characterized by prayer. There are a lot of things we think of when we think about going to church but is prayer the first thing that pops into our minds. Offers priests a prayerful respite from daily ministerial activity.
