This full-service historic property hosts numerous corporate functions and social events in its 13,500 square feet of meeting space. The spectacular Silver Ballroom showcases 25-foot ceilings, silver-leaf moldings, and original 1926 sterling silver and Waterford crystal chandeliers. Corporate travelers and other guests can use the business center, which is open 24/7, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Rooms vary in size, but the King Room we saw was on the small side, with little room between the foot of the bed and the bathroom's entrance. Bathrooms also tend to be small, with pedestal sinks, magnifying mirrors, and modest shower stalls.
Dining and Bar
There is also a formal ballroom, making this a great downtown destination for a Chattanooga wedding or other special occasions. The hotel can provide planning assistance for events, including catering menus, A/V services, and more. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), this property is taking steps to protect the safety of guests and staff. Certain services and amenities may be reduced or unavailable as a result. The hotel is gorgeous and we loved both the facilities and the location downtown. A draw when booking is the indoor heated pool advertised, however, it’s not very warm and much in need of a renovation.

It also had a small upholstered chair and a bench at the foot of the king bed. My trip to Chattanooga was working travel, and I made use of the free wifi at the hotel. I was very pleased with the speed and stability of the connection. Find thousands of other hotels, flights, car rentals and package deals with KAYAK. It’s all here at The Read House

In January 21, 1861, at the eve of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis stopped at the hotel on his way home to Mississippi after resigning from the United States Senate. The merging of the Western and Atlantic Rail Roads in the mid-1800s made Chattanooga much more accessible. Goods could be transported East to West, through Appalachia.
Property highlights
I thought the Read House was very conveniently located, and it was near everything I wanted to do while I was in town. There’s no free parking in downtown Chattanooga during the day (some of the lots and street meters don’t charge to park after six p.m.), but I was able to find plenty of paid parking when I needed it. I divided my three-and-a-half days in Chattanooga with downtown activities and more active pursuits around the Lookout Mountain area, which is about six miles from downtown Chattanooga. I loved being able to walk or take the free shuttle around downtown Chattanooga. The city is easy to navigate on foot, and if you’re up for walking a mile or so, you can get to a lot of cool places in the city. Jefferson Davis stayed at the Crutchfield House on January 21, 1861, while traveling home to Mississippi after resigning from the United States Senate.

Another Chattanooga urban legend is also attached to Room 311, one that include the famous gangster Al Capone as staying in this haunted room during his federal trial. The budding river town of Chattanooga was only 33 years old in 1872 when a couple from McMinnville, Tennessee - John and Caroline Read - first opened their hotel along what is now M.L. King Boulevard in downtown Chattanooga after the Civil War ended.

Fabulous hotel, clean extremely comfortable beds, hotel staff a pleasure to deal with. Everything was delightful and decorated for Christmas. Location was convenient to the electric buses which were a bonus.
The menu includes a selection of raw and chilled seafood, wet and dry-aged steaks, and other specialty dishes such as lamb, veal, and seafood. If you’re in the mood for dessert or an indulgent after-dinner drink, Bridgeman’s won’t let you down there. There is also an extensive wine list and a full bar.
Many guests that have stayed in the room, including Al Capone, have made it through the night without any paranormal activity, while others report it being heavy during their stay. Set in Chattanooga, The Read House, Downtown City Center offers air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi. The property is less than 0.6 mi from Tennessee Aquarium and a 5-minute drive from the University of Tennessee.
Bridgeman’s Chop House is the hotel’s premier on-site restaurant. The sophisticated setting – think dark wood walls, elegant white tablecloths, and waitstaff in dapper uniforms – sets the tone for a “treat yourself” style meal. Although the convenient downtown location of the Read House will make you want to get out and explore, there are dining options inside the hotel, too. The elegant lobby sets the tone for your Read House experience. Marble floors, the hotel’s original crystal chandeliers, and plush 1920s-style furniture make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The uniforms of the hotel personnel stay true to the period.
Who had heard of The Read House knew of the legendary Peter “Rabbit” Bridgeman. He served and charmed hotel and dining guests for 47 years. There’s an electric shuttle that stops right across the street from the hotel (go out the side entrance where the restaurants are), and you’ll see the shuttle stop. The shuttles are clean and convenient if you’re flexible on time, but overall, I found the wait time longer than what was posted. If you’re not in a hurry, a free ride is a free ride.
